Zemeckis will use MoCap and 3D CGI in "Roger Rabbit 2"

Be afraid... Be very, VERY afraid... Because it seems that some of our deep fears about the Roger Rabbit sequel are true after all:

MTV MOVIES EXCLUSIVE: Robert Zemeckis Indicates He'll Use Performance-Capture And 3-D In 'Roger Rabbit' Sequel

This basically means that all human characters will be MoCapped (I mean, they will be portrayed via Performance Capture, a technique that was extensively used at "The Polar Express", "Beowulf" and "Disney's A Christmas Carol") while all cartoons will remain two-dimensional, but no MoCapped (like traditionally animated, but using digital techniques similar to those used in "Looney Tunes: Back in Action"). That way, Bob Hoskins would reprise his role as Eddie Valiant, Roger and his fellow friends will look like in the old times, and the whole movie will be easier to make.

So, what are your thoughts? It seems that we'll finally get the Roger Rabbit sequel after all, but I'm afraid about Roger and Eddie Valiant going into the Uncanny Valley D=

They´re working for me, Alexander. P-p-p-p-p-please check your browser or your internet connection =3

Yup, they seem to be working now.
Having seen it, I am not sure what to feel. I don't care much for that soulless doll look the humans in Zemeckis' CGI movies and I really don't like the idea of that being used in a RR movie.
But on the other hand, I am so desperate for a new Roger movie that at this point I should be grateful for whatever we'd get as long as it brings our wabbit back into the spotlight.
Even if the movie will not be perfect it will be great to see all kinds of new toys, magazines, posters and tv appearances of Roger again. A chance to re-live the lost time from my childhood you might say.

That was the first thing I thought, Alexander: TOYS. Figurines, plushies, electronic dolls, collectible dolls... Finally, those would be easy to get.

Also comics, cards, stickers, stationery and all that cool stuff.

I´m still fearful about this new sequel, but I´d like to get at least one mediocre movie featuring our wabbit. Anything is good at this moment.

Look at this paragraph in the MTV site article:

Here's where it gets tricky. Even at its best, mo-cap technology creates characters that indisputably look animated. For the new movie, the prospect would be that for all the tech advances, the human actors would look less real than they did in the first film. Unless – and here we jump into pure speculation mode – that mo-cap look would be part of the storyline. Be still our cartoonishly beating hearts, could the film take place predominantly — or perhaps just the 3-D mo-cap portions — in Toontown?

The writer has a good idea there and I think he might be right.

I also agree that any RR movie is better than nothing at this time. We've waited FAR too long for a comeback of Toontown's craziest rabbit.

And if this really does mean things like more merchandise tie-ins and, most of all, a return of the Roger costumed character to the Disney theme parks, then I'm really all for this sequel being made even more.

I was happy to hear that WFRR2 script is being worked on, and then this?!
I'm not sure about that creepy(ahh uncanny valley~~) mo-cap 3D people being in the movie, but yes I do want something that has Roger in it.
Hope he makes the right choice...

@Dizneyfan:

Well, there are a lot of possibilities... Like people entering Toontown and becoming animated in some sort of way (retaining their human shape, but acting like cartoons with all that squash n´ stretch). Same with objects like cars, planes or random stuff.

Everyone in the Internets is speculating about another MoCap flop like The Polar Express or Beowulf but this time we´re talking about Roger Rabbit... Nothing, and I really mean it: NOTHING can´t go wrong, and Zemeckis knows it.

@Mik:

I feel the same way about this sequel project. Hope we can get a decent Roger Rabbit sequel, or at least, hope we can get some neat toys. Just imagine a Roger electronic doll that tells you jokes and reacts to certain situations... That would be neat! =3

What's with all the drama? If they're staying 2D like he said, what's the problem? Motion capture is easier to work with than drawing everything out by hand. Computers are the way to go even with 2D animation. I don't think they're going to change it drastically like make everyone 3D, if they got the original people working on it they should know better to keep it looking true to original, just updated.

Well anonymous fella... It's not about the drama. It's about Zemeckis' obsession with Performance Capture and CGI.

But after watching "Disney's A Christmas Carol", I changed drastically my opinion, if that makes you feel a little relieved. Still don't know if the upcoming movie will be done in the tradition of the first one (I mean, real actors against animated characters, puppets and props) or it will be fully animated, with characters in 2D interacting with characters, props and scenery in 3D, but now I think Zemeckis has really improved his MoCap technique. I mean: the "uncanny valley" worries are slowly getting ahead of my mind, and now I'm pretty sure he'll pull out a fairly decent sequel from the original Roger Rabbit movie.

By the way, you don't need to post as anonymous here: every comment and every person is welcome to Toontown Antics, so p-p-p-p-please don't be shy and introduce yourself to us! =3
